Frequently asked questions.
Where Do you get your ideas?
Driving, listening to music, paying attention to people and the world around me. I latch on to a sight, a person, or a headline that captures my interest and build a story around it.
What came first: the book or script?
There is so much misreporting around this. It was always the book! Or rather a long detailed outline of a book. Many chapters were complete, some were roughed in, and about sixty percent of the way through, I paused and wrote it out as a screenplay over a weekend. I sat down on a Friday and finished a first draft of the script by Sunday night.
are you a plotter or a pantser?
A bit of both. It’s always wiser to plot, but I’m the worst at taking my own advice. When you pants, there’s often a lot more heavy lifting in the editing process.
Who are some of your favourite authors?
There are SO many, but here are a few i love: A.S. King, Derek Milman, Lev AC Rosen, Kelly Devos, David Levithan, Andrew Smith, Nicola Yoon, John Green, Hannah Moskowitz,
do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Read critically. Really think about what worked or didn’t in stories or movies and why. Scriptshadow was a great resource for me, even if you don’t write scripts.
Find a critique partner to swap work with.
Tell the truth on the page.
Don’t give up.
Will Into the deep blue have a sequel?
Blue is very much a standalone, but of course I couldn't stop thinking about what happens next for Fiona and Nick, so the threads of plot for a sequel exist. You never know!
